*raising hand* I'd take a rock first right about now and be damn proud of it. It sounds like your rockfish/hatchery steelhead had the mentality of a suckerfish. Like pulling in a drowned log.
As for poor Albacore losing your first fish, I'm sure he's still having nightmares about that. Thats a fisherman buddies worst nightmare!

Jon, I think you might like Albacore. Other than being a bit surly and cantancerous, he's a pretty decent guy. Just don't trust him to tail a fish for you ;)

Great story! Wish I could have been there to see that. Glad another hatchery wonk was removed from the gene pool.

Kirk,
I believe you just hit the nail directly on the head.
" You’d think they would learn. But then again, the same thing could be said for us!"
No more of an accurate statement could be made than that. After suffering a horrid skunking my last 5 outings, you'd think that I'd learn... But NO!!!! I'm to damned stubborn and pig headed to say, I'm not going back there! Or maybe I just have a hyper-active determination streak that keeps me going back. Just like I'll be back out there tomorrow and Sunday probably facing a 6th and 7th skunking in a row.
All hail the meat stick!
Yes I'll be employing the "dirty fishing" tactics of "dead drifting" my hand-tied lowly glowly with a hand-tied price or possie bugger dropper under a thingamabobber to try and cleanse the waters of another hatchery steelhead or two.
But, you'd think I would have learned by now.
Have a great weekend,
Dave

Pat- that's what I'm talkin about- a return on your investment! Too funny. I've heard of that happening twice now. Makes you wonder what a fish is thinking when they've tastes the barb and have a length of mono and a couple flies dangling from their lips, and they hit another imitation shortly thereafter. You'd think they would learn. But then again, the same thing could be said for us!

Kirk, you're giving me a reason to look forward to Fridays besides it marking the weekend. Enjoyed reading your tale - one that perhaps all fly fishers can relate to in some manner. Like the time a nice rainbow broke off my tippet and took two nymphs tied to it. An hour later I had both flies back thanks to the greed that prompted that fish to eat another one of flies a second time.

Dave, it just goes to show that anything's possible when fishing. Keeps it interesting!

Kirk,
A very similar incident happened to me just a couple of months ago. However this wasn't a hatchery fish. No this was a native trout. In less than 30 minutes the same fish ate the same exact fly, and I have the pictures to prove it. So, not only are the hatchery fish eager to take an offering multiple times, it would seem that native fish can be just as eager.
All hail the meat stick!
